Product Name: Phenate (Clomid)
Drug Name: Clomiphene Citrate
Packaging Type: Packets of 5 x 50 mg Tablets
Manufacturer: Pacific Pharmaceuticals
Use: Clomiphene citrate is a synthetic medication that affects the way in which a woman ovulates. It can help increase the chance of pregnancy in women who are having trouble conceiving.
How to take it: The usual dose is 50 mg once daily for 5 days, starting on the fifth day of the menstrual period. Women who do not have menstrual cycles can begin taking it on any convenient day. The dose may be increased gradually, up to a maximum of 250 mg a day. Clomiphene is usually prescribed for 3 to 4 menstrual cycles and is stopped if pregnancy is achieved during that time.
Side effects: Side effects occur infrequently and generally do not interfere with treatment at the recommended dosage of clomiphene. They tend to occur more frequently at higher doses and during long-term treatment. More common side effects include abdominal discomfort, enlargement of the ovaries, hot flushes. Less common side effects include abnormal uterine bleeding, breast tenderness, depression, dizziness, fatigue, hair loss, headache, hives, inability to fall or stay asleep, increased urination, inflammation of the skin, light-headedness, nausea, nervousness, ovarian cysts, visual disturbances, vomiting, weight gain.
Precautions: To be effective, this medication should be taken as prescribed for the full treatment period. Do not stop taking clomiphene on your own. Use some means of monitoring ovulation (for example, by recording body temperature changes or by using a home urine ovulation test kit), as it is crucial to discontinue use of this drug when pregnancy occurs. See your doctor with each cycle and be examined before resuming clomiphene therapy. There are many important aspects to the treatment of infertility; clomiphene is one of them. Remember to follow instructions concerning the frequency and timing of intercourse with your partner. Try to take clomiphene at the same time every day. Maintain a strict dosing schedule and try not to miss any doses. Remember that doses of clomiphene can be doubled if you miss one day.
