Dosage Take it with plenty of water. The tablets or liquid should be taken on an empty stomach, either 1 hour before eating or 2 hours after eating. Be sure to check the instructions carefully. Do not take Zithromax at the same time as antacids that contain aluminum or magnesium. They will reduce the amount of Zithromax in your blood. Side effects Side effects include fever, skin rash, swelling and difficulty in breathing. They include diarrhoea, nausea, and pain in the abdomen. Some people get very sensitive to sunlight. Others may get headaches, be dizzy or sleepy, or have some problems hearing. Very few people who take Zithromax get these side effects. However, most anti-HIV medications also cause problems in the digestive system. Zithromax could make those problems worse. Antibiotics kill some helpful bacteria that normally live in the digestive system. You can eat yogurt or take supplements of acidophilus to replace them. Precautions Allergic reactions can occur with Zithromax use. People with a history of allergy, asthma, hay fever or hives seem to be more susceptible to these reactions. The reaction can be immediate and severe. Allergic symptoms include wheezing, hives, itching, swelling, spasms in the throat and breathing tubes, joint and muscle pain, difficulty breathing, fever and skin rashes. Nausea and vomiting are not symptoms of an allergic reaction. Taking the antibiotic repeatedly or for prolonged periods may result in bacterial or fungal overgrowth which can lead to a second infection. When this occurs, the Zithromax may need to be stopped and another antibiotic prescribed to treat the new infection. Diarrhoea often develops while taking Zithromax. This is sometimes caused by an overgrowth of bacteria in the gut that are not killed by the antibiotic. In severe cases, this may be life threatening and would require treatment with other antibiotics. In mild cases, symptoms disappear shortly after the drug is discontinued.
