Product: Viracept
Drug Name: Nelfinavir Mesylate

Packaging Type: Bottles of 270 x 250 mg Tablets

Manufacturer: Agouron Pharmaceuticals Inc, a Pfizer company.

Use: Viracept is a type of drug called a protease inhibitor, and when used in combination with other HIV drugs, it offers effective treatment today against HIV infection. It also saves options in later treatment you can take.

How to take it: Your doctor will decide what dosing schedule is right for you, but the most common is 5 pills twice a day for adults. If you have trouble swallowing the pills, try dissolving them in liquid or crushing them in soft food. Just make sure you get your full dose by consuming everything you mix with it within six hours. If the mixture is not consumed all at once, refrigerate and drink within six hours. Don't mix Viracept with fruit juice, as this combination can have a bitter taste. You need to take Viracept with meals. Your body absorbs the medicine better with food in your stomach. You need to eat with your medication so that Viracept can work well.

Side effects: The most common side effect of Viracept is diarrhea. Side effects that occurred very rarely in some patients include nausea, flatulence, and rash. Ask your doctor if you would like more information about possible side effects you may experience with Viracept.

Precautions: There are people who need to be careful when taking protease inhibitors, such as people with diabetes mellitus or hemophilia type A or B. Some people have developed diabetes or worsened their existing diabetic condition; some have seen their blood sugar go up. Some types of hemophiliacs have experienced increased bleeding. Changes in the distribution of their body fat have been reported among patients taking HIV drugs including Viracept. Researchers are not yet sure if it was Viracept that caused these problems, but if you have an existing condition like those described above, then you should talk to your doctor about how best to approach this.Medications to avoid while taking Viracept: Propulsid® (cisapride, for heartburn), Cordarone® (amiodarone, for irregular heartbeat), Quinidine (for irregular heartbeat), Cafergot® and other ergot derivatives (for migraines), Halcion® (triazolam), Versed® (midazolam), Rifampin (for tuberculosis), Mevacor® (lovastatin), Zocor® (simvastatin).
