Product Name: Symbicort
Drug Name: Budesonide/Eformoterol Fumarate

Packaging Type: 120 dose inhalers containing 200/6 (200mcg Budesonide, 6 mcg Eformoterol.

Manufacturer: AstraZeneca

Use: Symbicort is a new asthma maintenance treatment for adults. Budesonide is a type of medicine called a corticosteroid, which reduces the inflammation of the airways that is mainly responsible for the symptoms of asthma.

How to take it: Dosage is individual according to disease severity. When control has been achieved, the dose should be titrated to the lowest dose at which effective control of symptoms is maintained. To minimise oropharyngeal thrush, rinse the mouth out with water after each dosing occasion. In general, the recommended maintenance dose is 1-2 inhalations once or twice daily.

Side effects: Common side effects include headache, palpitations, tremor, candida infection in the oropharynx, mild throat irritation, coughing, hoarseness. More uncommon side effects include tachycardia, muscle cramps, agitation, restlessness, nervousness, nausea, dizziness, sleep disturbances. Rare: Exanthema, urticaria, pruritus, skin bruising, bronchospasm. Other rare or very rare side effects include (budesonide) Psychiatric symptoms such as depression, behavioural disturbances, signs or symptoms of systemic glucocorticosteroid effects, immediate and delayed hypersensitivity reactions (including dermatitis and angioedema). ( formoterol) angina pectoris, hyperglycaemia, cardiac arrhythmias.

Precautions: If you are taking Symbicort, you should still have your blue inhaler with you in case you have an asthma attack or need to relieve symptoms. The patients should seek medical advice if a previously effective dosage regimen no longer gives the same relief. Particular care is needed for patients who have with glucocorticoids may lead to signs or symptoms of hypercorticism, suppression of HPA function and/or suppression of growth in children and adolescents. Symbicort Turbuhaler should be administered with caution in patients with severe cardiovasculaar disorders, diabetes mellitus, untreated hypokalemia or thyrotoxicosis. Pregnancy and lactation: As with other drugs administered during pregnancy, the benefits for the mother should be weighed against the risks for the foetus. It is not known whether budesonide or formoterol passes into human milk. Beta-adrenergic blockers (including eye drops) can weaken or inhibit the effect of Symbicort Turbuhaler. Ketoconazole may increase systemic exposure to budesonide. this should be taken into consideration during long term treatment with ketoconazole.
