Details

Product Name: Parnate
Drug Name: Tranylcypromine

Packaging Type: Packets of 50 x 10 mg Tablets

Manufacturer: GlaxoSmithKline

Use: Parnate is a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) and has been shown to be effective in helping people with social anxiety disorder. Parnate is technically classified as an antidepressant, but it has some anti-anxiety properties as well. It is relatively easy to take, although proper guidance is necessary.

How to take it: The usual effective dosage is 30 mg per day, usually given in divided doses.

Side effects: Patients may experience restlessness or insomnia; may notice some weakness, drowsiness, episodes of dizziness or dry mouth; or may report nausea, diarrhea, abdominal pain or constipation. Most of these effects can be relieved by lowering the dosage or by giving suitable concomitant medication.

Precautions: While Parnate is in your system, certain food restrictions must be adhered to. Patients must not eat food that is rich is tyramine, i.e., been aged, fermented, or spoiled. Aged cheeses are the biggest offenders and must always be avoided. Some alcoholic beverages (including fake beer, dark beers, and open draft beer) should also be avoided. Antihistamines, decongestants and some prescription medication may also cause a reaction.
