Generic Tofranil
Generic Name: Imipramine
Strips of 10 x 25 mg Tablets
Use
Generic Tofranil is in a class of drugs called tricyclic antidepressants. Some doctors also prescribe Imipramine to treat bulimia, attention deficit disorder in children, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and panic disorder.
Dosage
The usual starting dose is 75mg a day. The doctor may increase this to 150mg a day. The maximum daily dose is 200 mg. Take imipramine exactly as directed by your doctor.
Side effects
Side effects may include abdominal cramps, agitation, anxiety, black tongue, bleeding sores, blood disorders, blurred vision, breast development in males, confusion, congestive heart failure, constipation or diarrhoea, cough, fever, sore throat, delusions, dilated pupils, disorientation, dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth, episodes of elation or irritability, excessive or spontaneous flow of milk, fatigue, fever, flushing, frequent urination or difficulty or delay in urinating, hair loss, hallucinations, headache, heart attack, heart failure, high blood pressure, high or low blood sugar, high pressure of fluid in the eyes, hives, impotence, increased or decreased sex drive, inflammation of the mouth, insomnia, intestinal blockage, irregular heartbeat, lack of coordination, light-headedness (especially when rising from lying down), loss of appetite, nausea, nightmares, odd taste in mouth, palpitations, purple or reddish-brown spots on skin, rapid heartbeat, restlessness, ringing in the ears, seizures, sensitivity to light, skin itching and rash, stomach upset, stroke, sweating, swelling due to fluid retention (especially in face or tongue), swelling of breasts, swelling of testicles, swollen glands, tendency to fall, tingling, pins and needles, and numbness in hands and feet, tremors, visual problems, vomiting, weakness, weight gain or loss, yellowed skin and whites of eyes.
Precautions
Use caution when driving, operating machinery, or performing other hazardous activities. Imipramine may cause drowsiness or dizziness. Alcohol may increase drowsiness and dizziness while you are taking imipramine. Do not take imipramine if you have taken a monoamine oxidase inhibitor such as isocarboxazid (Marplan), phenelzine (Nardil), or tranylcypromine (Parnate) within the last 14 days. Before taking imipramine, tell your doctor if you have liver disease, kidney disease, asthma, thyroid disease, diabetes, stomach or intestinal problems, high blood pressure or heart disease, had a heart attack in the last 6 weeks, an enlarged prostate or difficulty urinating, or glaucoma. Do not take imipramine without first talking to your doctor if you are pregnant or could become pregnant during treatment. Do not take imipramine without first talking to your doctor if you are breast-feeding a baby.
