Terazosin, the generic version of name brand drug Hytrin , belongs to a class of drugs called alpha adrenergic blockers. Terazosin works by causing blood vessels to relax and expand. This improves blood flow. Terazosin is also used to relax muscles in the prostate gland and in the bladder neck. This can improve a condition called benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH), a non-cancerous enlargement of the prostate gland. BPH can cause difficulty and discomfort during urination.
Counter to intuition, the size of the prostate gland does not correspond to the severity of the symptoms of BPH or the degree of obstruction of the urinary bladder. An increase in smooth muscle tone in the prostate gland and the bladder neck is what leads to constriction of the bladder.
Side effects of terazosin include dizziness or fainting due to lower blood pressure. This is most pronounced at the beginning of therapy with terazosin. Usually, the drug is prescribed for administration at bedtime to minimize dizziness. Sometimes patients feel dizzy or lightheaded upon standing up abruptly.
People who take other blood pressure medications such as verapamil should inform their doctor before beginning therapy with terazosin. Both medications may require adjustments in dosage. It is also important for cataract patients to discuss the use of terazosin as it relates to cataract surgery. Some patients who have cataract surgery experience a flaccidness of the iris, resulting in constricted pupils. There appears to be no benefit to stopping terazosin therapy prior to cataract surgery, however.
