Terazosin is a generic version of the drug Hytrin, which is used for two main reasons: to lower blood pressure, and to ease symptoms of benign prostate hyperplasia, or BPH, which is enlargement of the prostate gland that can cause urinary discomfort and difficulty. Terazosin is in a class of drugs called alpha adrenergic blockers (sometimes just called “alpha blockers”). Alpha adrenergic blockers work by relaxing the smooth muscles of blood vessels, the prostate gland, and the bladder neck.
Terazosin can cause a dramatic lowering of blood pressure, particularly when the patient first starts taking it, or when the patient stands up abruptly. For this reason, doctors will often prescribe the drug to be taken at bedtime at a low dose, and then increase the dose incrementally if necessary.
Dizziness is the main side effect of Terazosin, but it is usually not severe enough to cause patients to stop taking it. Other reported side effects include headaches, swelling, fatigue, weakness, heart palpitations, stuffy nose, sleepiness, lowered sex drive, impotence, and change in vision. Side effects are usually mild and temporary. Chest pain, swelling of feet and hands, and ringing in the ears are side effects that should be reported.
