Terazosin, or the generic version of the drug Hytrin, is an alpha adrenergic blocker used in the treatment of non-cancerous enlargement of the prostate gland called benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH). Terazosin works swiftly and results in more comfortable urination in around 70% of patients.
Terazosin can also be used in the management of high blood pressure. It can be prescribed alone, or in combination with beta blockers or diuretics. Terazosin is in the same class of drugs as doxazosin (Cardura), tamsulosin (Flomax), and alfuzosin (Uroxatral).
Terazosin works by allowing blood vessels to relax and expand, and by allowing the muscles in the prostate region and the neck of the urinary bladder to relax, resulting in easier urination for men with BPH.
A common side effect of Terazosin and other drugs that lower the blood pressure is a light headedness, or even fainting upon standing up abruptly. This side effect is usually associated with the earliest days of treatment, or times when dosage is increased. To minimize this side effect, the drug is started at low doses and taken at bedtime while lying down. Then the dose can be gradually increased if necessary.
