Urimax is a generic version of the drug Flomax which is used to treat a condition called benign prostate hyperplasia, or noncancerous enlargement of the prostate gland. This condition can compress the urethral canal and cause urinary problems such as frequency, hesitancy, increased risk of infections of the urinary tract, and urinary retention.
Urimax is also sometimes prescribed off-label as a treatment for male pattern baldness. The drug prevents the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT). Blocking production of DHT is sometimes able to slow, stop, or even reverse hair loss. Patients may have to take the drug for three to six months before seeing any results. If a patient doesnt see any change in six months, then it is likely that the drug will be ineffective.
Side effects of Urimax include headache, stuffy nose, and ejaculation problems, rarely including a condition called retrograde ejaculation. Dizziness upon standing is also a potential side effect. Patients shouldnt drive or operate heavy machinery until they know how Urimax affects them.
The effects of Urimax may be altered by the presence of certain other drugs. Patients should inform their doctors if they take alpha-blockers, Cimetidine, or Warfarin.
