Doxazosin, the generic version of the drug Cardura, has been around since 1990, and is used in the treatment of high blood pressure and in cases of benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH), a non-cancerous enlargement of the prostate gland that can cause discomfort and difficulty urinating. Doxazosin is an alpha-1 adrenergic blocker, in the same class with drugs like prazosin (Minipress), silodosin (Rapaflo), tamsulosin (Flomax), and terazosin (Hytrin).
Doxazosin works by preventing norepinephrine from binding to receptors called alpha-1 receptors that are on smooth muscle that surrounds the blood vessels, bladder, and prostate gland. This causes the blood vessels and muscles of the bladder and prostate to relax and dilate, which reduces blood pressure. In many cases, it also allows for more comfortable urination in men with an enlarged prostate gland.
Men who take vardenafil (Levitra) or tadalafil (Cialis) should inform their doctor before taking doxazosin. When doxazosin is combined with these drugs, the blood pressure can drop too much.
Perhaps the most common side effect from doxazosin is dizziness or light headedness, particularly when standing up. Fainting can occur, and so patients are advised to take the medicine at bedtime and rising slowly until they learn how severely they are affected. This side effect is most common during the first day or days of therapy, and when dosages are increased.
Other common side effects include headache, stomach pain, fluid accumulation, and diarrhea. These side effects are usually mild and temporary.
