Flomaxtra was introduced in 2005 for the treatment of benign prostate hyperplasia, or BPH, which is a non-cancerous enlargement of the prostate gland. Flomaxtra is a different formulation of the drug tamsulosin (Flomax MR), and it gives doctors another option for helping men manage BPH more effectively. Flomaxtra works by relaxing blood vessels and relaxing the neck of the bladder, allowing more comfortable urination.
There are two basic types of drugs used to treat BPH: alpha adrenergic blockers like Flomaxtra and Flomax, and 5-alpha reductace inhibitors, which block conversion of testosterone to DHT.
The difference between Flomaxtra and Flomax is the way in which the drug is delivered in the body. Flomaxtra uses what is called an Oral Controlled Absorption System (OCAS). The OCAS allows more consistent release of the drug over 24 hours. The benefit of this form of drug delivery is that a schedule can more easily be devised so that the peak benefit occurs overnight, preventing or diminishing the sleep disturbance of having to get up and urinate.
BPH affects almost 20% of men aged 50 to 59, and almost 33% of men over age 60. The majority of men with BPH go undiagnosed, perhaps believing their symptoms to be a normal part of aging. But BPH can affect the quality of life of both the patient and his partner, and has been associated with depression, anxiety, and sleeping problems.
Side effects reported with Flomaxtra include dizziness, weakness, and runny nose. These side effects were usually not severe enough to cause patients to stop taking Flomaxtra.
