Use: Detrusitol (Detrol) is a muscarin antagonist. It is used for the treatment of urinary incontinence, urgency and frequency in patients who are unable to control their bladder wall. Detrusitol (Detrol) controls the release of urine by reducing spasm and relaxing the smooth muscle of the bladder wall. It also increases the storage volume of the bladder and can act on the brain to delay the desire to urinate.
How to take it: The normal dose is 2mg twice daily, taken with or without food. The dose may need to be decreased to 1mg twice daily if you experience troublesome side-effects. Detrusitol (Detrol) may take up to 4 weeks before you see the maximum benefit of treatment.
Side effects: Tell your doctor if you notice any of the following and they worry you; Dry mouth, Heartburn, Headache, Constipation, flatulence or stomach pain, Dry eyes, Weight gain, Tiredness. Tell your doctor immediately if you notice any of the following; Dizziness or confusion, Blurred vision, Difficulty or pain in urinating (passing water), Skin rash, Shortness of breath, chest pain or irregular heart-beats, Swollen ankles, Seeing, hearing or feeling things that are not really there (halluncinations).
Precautions: Do not take Detrusitol (Detrol) if you have an allergic reaction to tolterodine or any other antimuscarinic medicine. Symptoms of an allergic reaction may include skin rash, itching or difficulty in breathing. Do not take if you are unable to pass urine, you have uncontrolled high blood pressure in the eye (narrow-angle glaucoma), you are pregnant or intend to become pregnant, you are breast-feeding or plan to breast-feed.
